England and Sri Lanka Ready for T20 World Cup Opener at Edgbaston

The 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup gets underway with hosts England taking on Sri Lanka at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Friday evening. England enter the tournament as one of the favorites and will look to make a strong start in front of their home supporters.

England have historically done well against Sri Lanka in T20 internationals, winning 10 of their 12 meetings to date. But Sri Lanka will draw lots of confidence from their very recent meetings since they have beaten England in both their T20Is this year. It will be the teams’ only meet for the Women T20 World Cup since their fourth tie in women’s T20 World Cup history.

England arrived in reasonably good form having clocked up a number of successes on the road, winning four out of six T20Is played in 2026. Sri Lanka has probably ironically, even more momentum than the Pakistanis headed into this one after winning their last five T20 internationals. They go into the tournament on a high, having recently won series against the West Indies and Bangladesh.

Probable Playing XIs

England:

Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Amy Jones, Nat Sciver-Brunt (captain), Alice Capsey, Heather Knight, Freya Kemp, Dani Gibson, Charlie Dean, Sophie Ecclestone, Linsey Smith, Lauren Bell.

Sri Lanka:

Vishmi Gunaratne, Chamari Athapaththu (captain), Hasini Perera, Harshitha Samarawickrama, Hansima Karunaratne, Kavisha Dilhari, Nilakshika de Silva, Kaushini Nuthyangana (wicketkeeper), Malki Madara, Sugandika Kumari, Kawya Kavindi/Chetana Vimukthi.

Key Players to Watch

One of the stars of 2023 has been England pace bowler Lauren Bell. Her form for the national team was also impressive after a great run at the Women’s Premier League. In his most recent T20I series against India, Bell took seven wickets and has gone on to keep an economy rate of only 7.4 in 2026. She could also make a greater contribution playing in home conditions which she knows so well.

Captain Chamari Athapaththu is still Sri Lanka’s greatest match-winner. Milinda Siriwardena (Sri Lanka) Sri is going to play in her tenth Women’s T20 World Cup, and the experienced all-rounder will need to bear a lot of Sri’s hopes. In the warm-up games she exhibited proper form, hitting 94 off only 58 balls against Pakistan. In Sri Lanka’s most recent series against Bangladesh, Athapaththu also took four wickets with the ball.

Weather and Pitch Report

Birmingham generally has a decent weather forecast with clear skies predicted for match day. A day prior to the match, rain hit the area but it is expected that conditions will be suitable for the opening fixture.

Both teams come into the tournament in good form so we should expect an exciting opening match. England would be keen to keep up their perfect record of wins against Sri Lanka while the tourists will want to continue their winning streak and pull off an early upset.
